3. In what ways is Ralph happy with their situation on the island?

4. What does Ralph do with the conch? What might the conch symbolize in this novel?

5. In what ways does the meeting represent the standards of society that the boys have been brought up with?


6. Why do you think Ralph is voted chief? How do you interpret Jack’s reaction to the vote?

7. Using the description on page 29, draw a sketch of the island. The paragraph begins: “It was roughly boat-shaped…”

Discussion Questions, Chapter 2

1. Find two quotations that indicate Ralph’s development as a leader. The quotations could be things Ralph says in the chapter or pieces the narrator says about him. Explain why you selected the two quotations and what you think they show.



2. In class, we agreed that the conch is a symbol for order and for society. Find one quotation in this chapter that backs up these assumptions. Explain the quotation’s significance.
