I'm reading a book called PLAINSONG by Kent Haruf right now. I'm only about 70 pages into it, but I already like it very much. The book centers around a small, mid-Western town with characters facing some difficult situations. One is a pregnant teenager who is kicked out of her house; another is a high school teacher with two young sons whose wife is unable or unwilling to leave her bed - she lies there all day and night and barely speaks to anyone. Haruf tells the story in very spare prose - so much is said with facial expressions and minimal dialogue. It isn't a 'pick-me-up' book, but it's very well written and - even though I'm not done - I would highly recommend it.
